Lessons I Learned from Patrick White
• Don't introduce an obvious plot for the first third or half of the novel.
• Characters need an inner life.
• Introduce all the characters separately before they interact with each other.
• Environment and objects both create mood and character.
• Weather is important.
• Cruelty and ugliness have their place, don't be afraid to use them.
• The grotesque is in the details: use it.
• Humor is vital.
