In this twenty-fourth installment of our quarterly series, Philosophers in the Midst of History, I discuss the life, thoughts, and influence of the ancient philosopher, tragedian, and advisor to Nero, Lucius Annaeus Seneca the Younger. We examine its historical situation in the culture of the Roman Empire ruled by the Julio-Claudian dynasty, at a time when education, philosophy and culture were widespread throughout the Roman world, and specifically some of the key ideas that defends Seneca and writes as a practitioner of Stoic philosophy.
