People often ask if they can do anything with a modern satellite dish, the small one with the offset feed you find on rooftops these days. Although most of them are too small to do much more than commercial television, the larger ones are a bit more capable. I recently got my hands on a 40 inch Channel Master antenna and replaced the Ku band LNB with a cheap L band feed antenna. This allows me to receive the GOES-East satellite which sends weather images and data 25/7. Although I won't be using this particular dish permanently, it was a fun and quick experiment.

I've done this before with a smaller TV antenna, but I had to enlarge the reflector with cardboard and tape, so it wasn't permanent! This video is here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?vEK8mFrxxSbY

I use a software defined radio (SDR) and filter/amplifier tuned for this and other weather satellites. You can find them at the links below (I get a small cut as an Amazon affiliate, so that helps the channel!)
