Illustration of an "all at once" scenario of an ice age Missoula flood that flowed from Montana through northern Idaho, Washington and Oregon to the Pacific Ocean. This illustrates what could have happened if it had happened all at once. However, "all of a sudden" is unlikely according to many Earth science experts (which I am not). It is more likely that the "one event/" pictured here occurred over several thousand years as a series of multiple events, large and small.

Thanks to J. Harlen Bretz for revealing this fascinating story.
Thank you Nick Zentner of nickzentner.com for revealing the many geologists who spend a lot of time researching the details of this story.

This map, animation, and video was created by a North Idaho non-scientist and GIS enthusiast using Open Source tools, Ubuntu Linux, GRASS-GIS, digital elevation models of USGS and USGS Missoula maximum flood height data. Thanks to everyone who devotes much of their time to creating open source tools. Thanks to everyone who makes government data available to the public and science enthusiasts like me.

Me: I imagine thick layers of ice and snow melting onto the earth, like I'm using a hair dryer to defrost my solid, frozen mini-fridge. It is a fascinating sculpture. If I do it a thousand times, it melts in a thousand different ways.
