Monks Hood by Ellis Peters
Monks Hood by Ellis Peters
A BBC Radio adaptation by Bert Coules of the novel by Ellis Peters.
It is December 1138. At the Benedictine Abbey of St. Peter and St. Paul in Shrewsbury, Abbot Heribert has been dismissed from his post and office and summoned to London, leaving his ambitious subordinate, the Prior, in charge Robert… something most brothers aren't too happy about.

At the same time, Gervaise Bonel, her family and her household moved into a house belonging to the Abbey as part of an agreement by which Bonel ceded her land and manor to the Abbey in exchange for food, clothing and 'a home for life… but his house is no more peaceful than the abbey community.

When Bonel suddenly falls ill, Brother Cadfael, the abbey's herbalist and gardener, is summoned to care for him… and discovers that Bonel is dead, murdered by poison… a poison prepared by Cadfael himself as a medicinal oil for painful joints. Not only that, but Cadfael discovers that Bonel's widow is the woman he was engaged to forty years ago, and his son Edwin has become the prime suspect in his father-in-law's murder and is now being hunted by the men from the sheriff.
