Motivational interviewing, a clinical tool to help people suffering from addiction: Elisabeth Davies
This is a short version by Elisabeth Davies, mental health counselor, who recently gave a talk at The Crossroads for members of the Arizona Recovery Housing Association (AZRHA) and other industry professionals local. She gave great insight into the effectiveness of using motivational interviewing as a clinical tool to help motivate people for positive change.
Motivational interviewing (MI) emphasizes the use of acceptance, accurate empathy, autonomy support, and affirmation when working with people who are ambivalent about change.
30 years of research has proven that the use of MI provides twice as many positive results compared to current treatment, in the treatment of substance use disorders, mental health disorders, criminal behavior and resistant behaviors .
Listen to this excellent summary and come away with great tools to help people change!
