Moving but not going anywhere: optimism fails! l THE GREAT WAR Week 49
Two months after the landing at Gallipoli, the fight became trench warfare. In Mesopotamia, British troops were losing the optimism they had felt just weeks before. The change of season brought more heat, making the weather go from bearable to unbearable. Heat has become a mortal enemy. While German Crown Prince Wilhelm unsuccessfully attempted to break through the Western Front in the Ardennes, Austro-German forces managed to push the Russians back to the East.
