In 1971, a paleontologist in Antelope County, Nebraska discovered the skull of an animal protruding from some badlands. Little did Dr. Michael Voorhies know that this discovery would not only define his career, but constitute one of the largest Miocene fossil sites in the world.
For the past five decades, Nebraska paleontologists have returned every summer to find more amazing fossils in the Ashfall fossil beds. And since the 1990s, there has been increased public awareness of the construction of the rhino barn. A building built around the bulk of the fossils found at the site where the fossil can remain in the ground and remain protected. Researchers can continue their work away from the elements and visitors can come inside to see exactly these 12-million-year-old animal bones. where they died ages ago.
I've always wanted to see this site and I'm excited to take you on this adventure. However, I want to encourage anyone who has the opportunity to take a trip to the Ashfall Fossil Beds for themselves. I know it seems a little out there but it's definitely worth it!
