Welcome to /"The Change Makers/" – our weekly video series.

In this series, our Change Makers share their stories, thoughts, ambitions and actions to leave the earth a better place – to be a good ancestor to future generations.

Our planet is experiencing catastrophic environmental damage and this requires us to think long term, beyond our lifetime, to evaluate our choices and take action to ensure a sustainable and healthy future for all.

The stories of those leading change – Change Makers – those who think and act with a long-term vision, are a source of inspiration.

Inspired, we can ask ourselves: “What can we do to be better ancestors?” »

This week, Better Ancestors visits Brendan Linnane, Foggy Dew Fungi, Placer County California.

Brendan began the journey that is Foggy Dew Fungi with a chance reading of “Mycellium Running” written by Paul Stamets.

Paul, in his book, talks about the importance of fungi as "the great recyclers of our planet" – as interface organisms between life, death and life again.

Fungi are all part of the group of eukaryotic organisms which includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar fungi. They do not photosynthesize, and growth is their form of mobility, except for spores, some of which can move through air or water on their own.

Inspired by the writings of Paul Stamet and his experience with Foggy Dew Fungi, Brendan considers mushrooms our teachers, “we can learn from them in so many ways”.

In untouched nature, all living creatures are connected, but most connections are invisible to us unless we learn to perceive things in a new way.

Paul Stamet: “Our fungal friends equip us with tools to act responsibly and repair our shared environment, paving the way for habitat recovery. »

Perhaps by slowing down, taking the time to sit quietly, look and listen carefully, we can learn from the natural world, our teacher.
