What if you woke up one morning and discovered that you had acquired another self, a double that was almost you and yet not you at all? What if this double shared many of your concerns but, in a twisted, upside-down way, advanced the very causes you had dedicated your life to fighting?

Not long ago, famed activist and public intellectual Naomi Klein had such an experience: She was confronted by a lookalike whose views she found abhorrent but whose name and public persona were similar enough to hers to that many people don't know who the same one was. WHO. Destabilized, she lost her bearings, until she began to understand this experience as one of the manifestations of a strangeness that many of us know but have difficulty defining: the text generated by the AI blurs the line between authentic and fake communication; New Age wellness entrepreneurs turned anti-vaccines are blurring familiar political allegiances of left and right; and liberal democracies teeter on the brink of absurd authoritarianism, even as oceans rise. Under such conditions, reality itself seems to be no longer anchored. Is there a cure for our collective moment of dizziness?

Naomi Klein is one of our most incisive and influential social critics, a vital analyst of what brands, austerity and climate profiteering have done to our societies and our souls. Here, she turns her gaze toward our psychic landscapes and outward toward the possibilities for building hope amid intersecting economic, medical, and political crises. With the help of Sigmund Freud, Jordan Peele, Alfred Hitchcock and bell hooks, among other accomplices, Klein uses ironic humor and a keen sense of the ridiculous to confront the strange doubles that haunt us – and which have also become intimate. and close like a distorted reflection in the mirror.

Combining comic memoir, chilling reporting, and cobweb analysis, Klein seeks to shatter that mirror and chart a path beyond despair. Doppelganger asks: What are we overlooking when we refine and perfect our digital thinking? Is it possible to get rid of our doubles and overcome the pathologies of a culture of multiplication? Can we create a policy of collective protection and undertake a real reckoning with historical crimes? The result is a revealing treatment of the way many of us think and feel today – and an intellectual adventure story for our times.

Naomi Klein is the award-winning author of international bestsellers, including This Changes Everything, The Shock Doctrine, No Logo, No Is Not Enough, and On Fire, which have been published in more than thirty-five languages. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia, founding co-director of the Center for Climate Justice at UBC, and Honorary Professor of Media and Climate at Rutgers University. Her writing has appeared in leading publications around the world and she is a columnist for The Guardian.

Klein will be in conversation with Ryan Grim. Grim is the DC bureau chief of The Intercept and host of the podcast /"Deconstructed/."
