People who wonder why Mormons would continue to tithe to a church that already has a treasury of over 100,000,000,000 worshipers probably don't understand how strong the message about tithing is for church members. church.
In this brief excerpt from a talk given in 2011 by Apostle Russell M Nelson (who is now the Prophet), you can see a typical example. In less than a minute, the following concepts are conveyed about tithing:
1. Faith can only be fully developed if you pay full tithing.
2. If you are faithful, you will see tithing as a *privilege* – implying that those who view it as a challenge or burden are inherently less faithful.
3. Tithing is an ancient divine law – which belies the reality that modern Mormon prophets have defined and proscribed tithing in their own ways.
4. Tithing is obligatory if you want to be considered among God's people
5. Paying tithing will protect you from being burned in the day of vengeance – a physical threat of death revealing the coercive nature of the Mormon implementation of tithing.
All of these factors are taken seriously and literally by believing members of the Church, who trust their leaders to convey God's will and truth.
This is why no matter how many hundreds of billions of dollars the Church places in interest-bearing, tax-exempt accounts, kept secret from outside oversight, Church members will continue to tithe. They will even be proud of their ability to do so without imposing any responsibility on leaders for the ethical and productive use of these funds.
If Mormons saw the governing body of JW or Scientology continuing to make spiritual threats against their members, forcing them to pay money to the church, when they have hundreds of billions of dollars at their disposal, they would would not hesitate to raise a critical voice.
This is not the case for their own leaders. This is what it means to support Church leaders.
