︎ A little story about me: I am a retired workshop teacher, I spent 36 years teaching graphic arts, professional printing trades, photography as well as additional tasks such as education of drivers and the directory advisor.
I started teaching shop in the fall of 1974. We had seven full-time shop teachers. (Industrial Education)
Automotive workshop
Construction • Built a house
Drawing, mechanics and architecture
Graphic arts
Small engines • Marine and lawn
Metallurgy workshop
Wood store
At the end of the 1990s, industrial education had to face new state directives called: Core Curriculum. This placed emphasis on the college readiness program for all Michigan students. Needless to say, students had no room during the school day for electives, which put industrial education out of business.
I also took workshop classes in high school. Mr. Pasternak and Mr. Mathers were my shop teachers in high school and they allowed me to enter Central Michigan University to become a shop teacher in Michigan.
I wouldn't want to be a high school student today. No in-store classes.
