BOOK DESCRIPTION

Growing up in the beautiful Berchtesgaden Mountains, just a stone's throw from Adolf Hitler's Alpine retreat, Irmgard Hunt had a seemingly happy and simple childhood. In his powerful, illuminating and sometimes frightening memoir, Hunt recounts a youth lived under the guidance of an evil but persuasive leader. As she grew up, the harsh reality of war – and of a few courageous adults who opposed the Nazi regime – aroused in her a skepticism of National Socialist ideology and Nazi propaganda that he had been taught to believe. Old Hunt watched as American troops occupied Hitler's retreat in the mountains, signaling the end of the Nazi dictatorship and World War II. As Nazi crimes began to be explained, many Germans attempted to deny the truth of what had happened; Hunt, on the other hand, was determined to know and confront the facts of her country's criminal past. On Hitler's Mountain is more than a memoir: it is the portrait of a nation that has lost its moral sense. This is a provocative story of a family and a community in a time and place in history that, although it is rapidly becoming distant from us, has important resonance for our times.
