It ran for 342 performances during its original West End run. Starting at Wyndham's Theatre, it later transferred to the Cambridge Theatre. The lead role of a Capone-like gangster, Tony Perelli, was played by Charles Laughton with Emlyn Williams as his sidekick and Gillian Lind as Perelli's Chinese mistress. Other cast members included Roy Emerton, Carol Reed, Dennis Wyndham and Gladys Frazin.
It was transferred to America in October 1930 and was performed 167 times at the Forrest Theater in Philadelphia. In 1931, Wallace fictionalized the play using the same title.
