Open Book FIRST 5.9 – A Climbing Story

Open Book is a historic climb located on Tahquitz Rock in Southern California. When Royal Robbins made the first free ascent in 1952, it was one of the most difficult routes in the country and became the first climb to score a 5.9 on the Yosemite decimal system. To this day, Open Book remains an all-time classic and a budding goal for any leader.

The route was first climbed with the help of John Mendenhall and Harry Sutherland, two leaders of the Sierra Club. Mendenhall fashioned wooden pitons from 2×4 lumber that he drove into the wide crack on the second pitch. He then attached stirrups to the stakes and stood on them to progress upwards.
