BOOK DESCRIPTION

Willie Black is a journalist who wasted a lot in his life: his liver, his lungs, a few ex-wives, and a troubled daughter can all testify to his abuse. He's lucky to have a job, to have managed to drink and talk his way out of a nice, comfortable job covering – and partying with – the capital's politicians.

Now he's back in the night-cop business, where he started when he came to work for the Richmond newspaper nearly thirty years ago. However, what Willie has always had going for him – ever since his tough days as a mixed-race kid on Oregon Hill, where white was the main color and fighting was everyone's favorite pastime – is courage. . His drug addict mother, Peggy, gave him that, at least. He has never backed down and shows no signs of changing.

When a student at the local university where Willie's daughter is a lifelong student is murdered, her headless body found along the South Anna River, the unfortunate suspected killer is arrested within days. Everyone seems to think the case is closed. But Willie, against the orders and advice of his bosses at the newspaper, the police and almost everyone else, doesn't think the case is solved at all and sets out on a one-man crusade to do what he has to always done: get the story.

Along the way, Willie runs into David Junior Shiflett, a nightmare from his youth turned city cop, and awakens another dark force, one that everyone thought was long gone. And a score born in the parking lot of an Oregon Hill brewery forty years ago will finally be settled.

The truth is out there, and Willie Black will dig it up or die trying.
