Paul Theroux in conversation with Pico Iyer about his book /"Deep South: Four Seasons on Back Roads/" during Live Talks Los Angeles on October 13, 2015.

Theroux's novels include The Lower River and The Mosquito Coast, and his renowned travel books include Ghost Train to the Eastern Star and Dark Star Safari. He spent fifty years traveling the world, venturing into the exotic, searching for the rich history and folklore of distant lands. For the first time, in his tenth travel book, Theroux explores a piece of America: the Deep South. He finds it a paradoxical place, full of incomparable music, unparalleled cuisine, and yet also some of the worst schools, housing and unemployment rates in the country. It is these regions of the South, so often ignored, which caught the attention of Théroux's great traveler.

Pico Iyer is the author of twelve books on topics as varied as Cuba, globalization, Graham Greene, and the 14th Dalai Lama, and writes up to 100 articles a year for magazines ranging from the New York Review of Books to Harper's , via Vanity Fair and Wired. He gave popular TED talks in 2013 and 2014. His most recent book is a short TED Original on the topic of stillness.
