PEJA – Tourist capital of KOSOVO? (Western Balkans by motorhome)

We wake up in Peja, the “tourist town” of Kosovo. We spend the day exploring this compact city on foot. Peja is also known by its Albanian name Pejë or its Serbian name "Peć", meaning "cave", probably after the nearby canyon(s), which you can still visit today. Peja was ruled by Serbs for 300 years after a great Serbian prince liberated the city from the Byzantine Empire in the late 12th century. Serbian archbishops then built houses and churches in the city, which later became a major religious center. The city was conquered by Montenegro, beginning a rapid succession of changes of hands from Montenegro to Austria-Hungary then to Serbia before becoming part of Yugoslavia until its dissolution in 1992. It remained part from Serbia until 2008, when Kosovo declared its independence.

Old Long Bazaar Street is an interesting bazaar with typical oriental architecture where you can still find some quirky artisan shops such as plis (cap makers), tailors, sixhades (carpet makers), shoemakers, Albanian watchmakers and goldsmiths. . The most preserved part of “Çarshia e Gjate” is the part called “Rrethishtja” (circle) in the middle where there is an ancient fountain. Patriarchate of Pec The church consists of three domes and includes three separate churches, including a fourth adjoining on the south side. All were built between the 13th and 14th centuries. The complex also includes modern housing for nuns, the ruins of an ancient monastery and a cemetery.
