/"In preparing these volumes for the public, I have undertaken this task with a sincere desire to avoid doing any injustice to anyone, whether on the National or Confederate side, other than the inevitable injustice of not not often mentioning it where special mention is There must be many errors of omission in this work, for the subject is too large to be treated in two volumes so as to do justice to all the officers and men engaged. There were thousands of cases, during the rebellion, of individual, company, regimental and brigade acts of heroism which deserve special mention and which are not mentioned here. The troops engaged in these acts must. consult the detailed reports of their individual commanders for the full history of these actions.
