In April 1945, Hitler's Reich was on the verge of extinction. John Russell's son Paul is stationed on the Eastern Front with the German army, awaiting the final Soviet assault. In Berlin, Effi, Russell's girlfriend, lives in disguise and helps fugitives escape from Germany. With a Jewish orphan to care for, she tries to survive the Nazis. Russell has not heard from them since he fled Germany in 1941. He is desperate to find out if they are alive and to protect them from the advancing Red Army. He flies to Moscow, asking permission to enter Berlin with the Red Army as a journalist, but when the Soviets arrest him as a spy, things look bleak, until they find him a usefulness which made him parachute into Berlin behind the German lines.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
David Downing grew up in the suburbs of London. He is the author of six books in the John Russell spy series, set during World War II in Berlin: Zoo Station, Silesian Station, Stettin Station, Potsdam Station, Lehrter Station and Masaryk Station, as well as the non-fiction book Sealing Their Fate: The Twenty-Two. The days that decided World War II. He is also the author of the Jack McColl series. The first book in the series is Jack of Spies published in May 2014 by Soho Crime, an imprint of Soho Press.
