Precolonial Black Africa is one of three major works by Cheikh Anta Diop which attempt to reconstruct the history of Africa and the black contribution to the foundations of Western civilization. In this work, Diop compares the political and social systems of Europe and black Africa from Antiquity to the formation of modern states. Its intention is not to provide a history as such, but rather guidelines for historians and all those seeking a scientific understanding of the precolonial societies of Africa, the Mediterranean and Europe and their connections with the first known stages of human development. Students and specialists of Africa and world history will be challenged by Diop's original – albeit controversial – analysis of the striking similarities and differences between black Africa and the West. Since 1974, when Diop's African Origin of Civilization was first published in English translation, his ideas have transformed the fundamental direction of African studies in the United States. Now in its tenth edition, this classic work recovers thousands of years of African history that were either silenced or suppressed by Western missionaries and scholars who "opened up" Africa. Finally, the renaissance of African historiography from an African historian's point of view has begun, and not a moment too soon./" Trained in his native Senegal and at the Sorbonne, Cheikh Anta Diop was director of the Radio Dating Center Carbone at the University of Dakar, Senegal until his death in February 1986.
