Psychedelics and the History of LSD

Nearly every culture throughout history has used consciousness-altering chemicals for the purposes of spiritual exploration. In the 20th century, these drugs attracted the attention of scientists. Psychedelics, as they are called, have been shown to be effective in treating incurable illnesses like depression and addiction. And they became a tool for studying the mind, opening “the doors of perception,” as Aldous Huxley wrote. But those doors closed when President Nixon declared psychedelics dangerous and medically useless.
