CASE DETAILS
On April 1, 2022, AWP began our search for Dedrick Smith, 26, who was last seen in Winston-Salem, North Carolina on October 3, 2006, and late that afternoon, the Adventures With Purpose team located Dedrick's car in just 14 hours. ' some water.
The next morning, April 2, by AWP working alongside local law enforcement, Dedrick's car containing human remains was found.
Dedrick was last seen at his girlfriend's home when she went out in the middle of the night to get food, and when she returned, he was gone.
He changed his shirt and left his girlfriend's house on Booker Street, driving his bright blue/turquoise 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with North Carolina license plate number NYB3645.
There were reported sightings of him in the area after his disappearance, but none of them have been confirmed.
Smith maintained daily contact with his loved ones before his disappearance and had promised his mother that he would visit her on October 4, but no family members or friends have heard from him since his disappearance.
Dedrick suffered from paranoid schizophrenia, characterized by predominantly positive symptoms of schizophrenia, including delusions and hallucinations. These debilitating symptoms blur the line between what is real and what is not, making it difficult for the person to lead a normal life.
We believe Dedrick's schizophrenia is what caused him to accidentally drive his car into Winston Lake 16 years earlier.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Dedrick's family during this difficult time.
