Respecting our national parks: the seven principles of leave no trace camping courses
Last year, nearly 300 million visitors visited our national parks. As great as it is, it is more important than ever to educate people about protecting and preserving these parks.

In this episode of Campsite Classes, our host Jason will discuss seven principles established by the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Let’s dive in and learn to respect our national parks!

1. Plan ahead and prepare
Always be aware of any regulations or special concerns in the area you plan to visit. Prepare for severe weather, hazards and plan for any emergencies. If possible, time your visit to avoid peak times. Visit in small groups or split large groups into smaller ones. All food products must be repackaged to minimize waste. And use a map, compass or GPS to mark your waypoints, rather than marking trees.

2. Travel and camp on durable surfaces
Durable surfaces include maintained campsites, trails, rocks, gravel, sand and snow. Protect certain areas by camping at least 200 feet from a stream or lake. It is best to use existing trails and campsites, keeping your campsite small while avoiding vegetation. When hiking, walk single file in the middle of the trail to avoid touching nature on both sides.

3. Dispose of waste properly
If you're bringing something to the park, like food, pack it up and take it with you when you leave. Use the toilets when they exist. If they are not available, dig a hole 6 to 8 inches deep and at least 200 feet from a water source. Be sure to package all materials used. In cases where you are washing yourself, your dishes, or a pet, be sure to carry the water 200 feet from a water source and use a small amount of biodegradable soap.

4. Leave What You Find
Visually examine, but do not touch any historical or cultural structures or artifacts. Leave rocks, plants, and anything else found naturally. Avoid introducing invasive species to the area and do not build structures, furniture or dig holes.

5. Minimize the impacts of campfires
Campfires can have a lasting impact on the environment. Use a light stove when cooking and take advantage of candle lanterns for lighting. Where fires are permitted, use an established fire pit. Keep fires small and always use wood from the surrounding area. Burn the wood and coals completely to ashes, then scatter them once they have dried and cooled.

6. Respect wildlife
Observe from a distance and never approach or follow wildlife. Never feed wild animals, as this could harm their health. Store your food safely and dispose of waste in a secure trash bin. If you are bringing a pet, be sure to control it at all times. You will want to avoid wildlife completely during sensitive times like mating, nesting, raising young, or during the winter months.

7. Be attentive to other visitors
Always be courteous and yield to others when on the trail. Take breaks and camp away from trails and other visitors to give everyone their space. Avoid using loud voices or causing loud noises.
