Rethinking Dating: The History of the United States at 250 Years
On February 22, four authors from the Winter 2024 issue of The American Historian, Denise Bossy, Alejandra Dubcovsky, Tai Edwards, and Michael Witgen, joined host Stephen Andrews to explore the theme “Rethinking Dating.” This webinar and The companion issue of The American Historian marks the start of the United States History 250 series, leading up to the 250th anniversary in 2026.

Our panelists examine early encounters between European and Indigenous groups. Far from the simplistic notion of a one-off interaction, they will challenge the idea that Europeans encountered a pristine, unchanging landscape inhabited by indigenous/'stuck in time' peoples. Their innovative work reveals the encounters as a complex and ongoing process where Indigenous groups actively shaped the narrative.
