Hi everyone, Aiden here with etrailer. Today we are going to take a look at this Curt Hitch Receiver Extension. This will be a great way to get some extra space with your hitch mounted accessories, whether it's a bike rack, cargo rack, something you need to get away from your vehicle. This will be a great option for Jeeps, anything with a spare tire in the back, or perhaps a truck with a tailgate. Many times, accessories like bike racks conflict with these items and getting a little extra space allows us to use these accessories more seamlessly with our vehicles. Let's look at this.

We now have this bike rack with my Ford Maverick. This is a vehicle that has had a lot of issues with bike racks because where the hitch is and where the tailgate drops when it opens I never had the ability to open it completely with a bike rack in the hitch. But you can see now that with the extender here, we have just enough space to fully open the tailgate and actually use it, get in and out of the bed if I need to and use my vehicle properly even if I have a bike. support in the hitch. Now, depending on your vehicle, your bike rack, any combination of things, this is not a guaranteed solution. We will give you the measurements in just one second to make sure it will be a solution for you.

But be aware that depending on your setup, you may need a different repeater. So a few things to note about the extender. It's going to work with a 2/" x 2/" receiver tube and just extend that 2/" receiver tube. It doesn't convert, it doesn't scale, it's just a 2/" x 2/". And the measurement you need to keep an eye on is the center of the hitch pin hole on your hitch to the hitch pin hole on the extender which will be 8/".

So wherever your bike rack is normally mounted, you'll get an extra 8/" of clearance with this extension. Like I said, you may need a different extension, whether it's longer or maybe you can go for a shorter extension if you don't But whatever, that's what it's going to give you As far as weight capacity goes, the extension can hold weight. gross towing of 3,500 pounds, that's the weight it can pull, and a maximum tongue weight of 350. pounds, that's that maximum downward pressure on the extension Now, it's important to note that when. you use an extension of any type, it will reduce the capacity of your hitch by 50%, so go with the lowest rated component, in this case it will likely be the hitch that is the lowest rated component. well noted, because as we start adding more and more weight further away from this hitch it will become harder to support, so make sure you don't overload anything and transport everything safely.

This one doesn't come with a hitch pin and clip, so you'll need to supply one yourself. And it's important to note that while your bike rack or accessory probably has an included or built-in anti-rattle device, the hitch pin and clip you grab won't have any sort of anti-rattle. rattle. properties with him. So in this case I recommend using some sort of additional anti-rattle device and making sure everything is a little more sturdy going forward. Now, one of the potential downsides to using a hitch extender, especially full-time on a vehicle that needs one, is that you may not have the same type of clearance issues with the support folded. Some vehicles, when a rack folds down, it doesn't stick out very far and you may be able to pull it into your garage and close the door behind it, which is good because you don't have to worry about to go out. in the elements. But if you use a hitch extender, the accessory will stick out a bit more, so if you're the type of person who leaves your bike rack in the hitch full time, then it's ready to go whenever you want . I want to go out, this will make it a little more invasive. And that's really all there is to it. Not everyone needs a hitch extender, but if you have a vehicle like mine or with a spare where clearance is often an issue with your bike racks, then this will be a great addition . For me, this is something I'll probably end up using quite often if I carry a bike rack, simply because I like the ability to open and actually use my tailgate. Even with the bikes loaded on this particular rack, I can open it all the way and access the items in my truck bed, which is awesome. It improves the overall functionality of
