RuPaul reveals Madonna considered him a 'worthless eunuch' and was furious he even entered the same room as her
Rupaul revealed Madonna cruelly treated him like a "worthless eunuch" when they met before he hit the big time.
The queen of drag recounts a chance meeting in the 1980s with the queen of pop in her new memoir, The House of Hidden Meanings.
He says the Like A Virgin star was furious he dared to enter the same room as her.
The RuPaul's Drag Race host, 61, says he first heard about Madonna, 65, when she was working the dressing room at New York club Danceteria.
While trying to make a name for himself in the city, he attended a seminar in 1984 where she spoke about her own struggle to reach the top.
He writes that some time later he found her by chance in the rest room of the Pyramid club, where he worked as a go-go dancer.
Describing how she held court with a small group of people, RuPaul said Madge looked at him "with an expression I'll never forget."
He said he saw a “snarl of contempt at the sight of me, a cold fury into which I would deign to enter while she was in the room.”
Visibly hurt by this snub, RuPaul explains that Madonna didn't try to hide the fact that she was thinking, "How dare you take oxygen from my world?"
He attributes this to the fact that she was successful because she understood that the world they lived in was a system where gender conferred power.
She evaluated everyone she dealt with based on their ability to “add something to that equation,” he writes, adding, “By viewing myself as a eunuch, I became worthless in her eyes.” »
RuPaul says that in that moment, Madonna reminded him of his own mother Toni, explaining that both were Leos who were "cold to a fault."
“IS LINKED TO BEING FAMOUS”
Much of the book, which will be released on March 5, focuses on RuPaul's strained relationship with his mother and father.
He writes that he never felt comfortable with them because they were "narcissistic" people whose "needs exceeded my own."
He also reveals that his mother was told by a medium while she was pregnant with him that he was “must be famous”.
The book covers RuPaul's childhood in San Diego, his first steps toward stardom after moving to Atlanta, and how he rose to fame in New York.
It also deals with her many romantic disappointments before meeting her husband Georges LeBar and her decades-long battle with drug addiction.
Despite his disappointment over his interaction with Madonna all those years ago, RuPaul – whose full name is RuPaul Andre Charles – didn't seem to hold it against her.
In April 2020, RuPaul's Drag Race featured an episode titled Madonna: The Unauthorized Rusical.
Contestants were tasked with recording vocals to songs inspired by Madonna.
