Mrs. Gwen Robson, a housewife in her sixties whose husband suffers from arthritis, is found dead – apparently from a nasty tourniquet – in a shopping center parking lot. Why would anyone want to kill Mrs. Robson, the talkative, greedy money-grubber? Wexford is just beginning to think things through when he is injured by a terrorist car bomb, apparently intended for his actress daughter Sheila (a political activist). So Burden goes on and becomes obsessed with Clifford Sanders, the frail young teacher who found the victim's body…and fled in panic. Convinced that the unstable Clifford (who lives with his creepy, stifling mother) is the murderer, Burden mercilessly interrogates the boy – with unexpected Freudian results. And, meanwhile, Wexford, recovering, pursues other lines of inquiry: Mrs. Robson's neighbors; his ties to a "Dear Abby" type magazine columnist; blackmail schemes and past secret crimes. Before presenting the satisfying (if unsurprising) solution, Wexford rather laboriously serves up an assortment of red herrings. But even though it's less well-plotted than Rendell's best, this film is no less gripping and disturbing – thanks to a list of suspects full of nervous pathos, Wexford's fatherly musings about his rival daughters and ( especially) to the richly developed nightmarish relationship between misguided Burden. and suspect number 1.
