Fake quotes attributed to famous authors are everywhere on the Internet. And it’s a bad deal for the brains! Don't be fooled into believing them wholeheartedly, and don't repost quotes that you're not sure actually come from the thinker to whom they're attributed, or you're part of the problem.

In this video, I identify ten fake quotes that are not from the author. They are often attributed to Lucius Annaeus Seneca, but are frequently falsely attributed to him in quote pages, images and videos. I discuss not only where the quote came from (where we know), but also why each of them is something Seneca would not have said, based on what we know that he said in his existing texts.

Here are the false quotes that we denounce in this video:
1. /"Religion is considered by ordinary people to be true, by wise people to be false, and by rulers to be useful./" by Edward Gibbon)
2. /'Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.' (excerpt from Compagnon de la jeunesse: volume 86)
3. “There is no right way to do a wrong thing.” » (Based on 19th century criticism of the actions and policies of the British Empire in India)
4. “We are the waves of the same sea, the leaves of the same tree, the flowers of the same garden.” (of Bahá'u'lláh)
5. /"Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the container in which it is stored than to anything it is poured on./" (often attributed to Mark Twain)
6. /"To err is human, but to persist in error (out of pride) is diabolical./" //"Errare humanum est, sed in errare perseverare diabolicum./" (from Augustine of Hippo)
7. /"He who spares the wicked hurts the good./" (from Publilius Syrus)
8. /"Love in its essence is a spiritual fire./" (by Emanuel Swedenborg)
9. /"Every sin is the result of collaboration/" (by Stephen Crane).
10. /"Throw me to the wolves and I'll come back to the front of the pack."
