SERGEI MEDVEDEV: Putin’s war of memory. Russia's Battles During World War II History
As part of our monthly lecture series, Sergei Medvedev gave a lecture on “Putin’s War of Memory”. Russia's battles during the history of the Second World War » on. Clemena Antonova, Research Director at IWM, welcomed the audience, introduced the speaker and moderated the question-and-answer session that followed the presentation. Timthy Snyder, IWM Permanent Fellow, provided additional comments.

Over the past decade, memory policies have been heavily contested. Putin's Russia has launched a major propaganda offensive in the run-up to the 75th anniversary of victory in World War II (May 8 in the rest of the world, May 9 in Russia), aiming to combat “falsifications” of war history by the West, and denying the crimes of Stalinism during the war. This presentation explores the implications of this memory war on Russia's relations with Europe and its role in legitimizing the ruling regime.
