In the spring of 1862, the Union moved deep into Tennessee in an attempt to cut the Confederacy in two. In early April, near the banks of the Tennessee River, a Federal army led by US Grant was ambushed by the army of Confederate General Sidney Johnston. The Battle of Shiloh came close to becoming a Union defeat, but good timing and a coordinated counterattack could turn the tide.
