Sinking of the Blucher: devastating loss of the newest German ship
A ship so new that its crew was still in training was sunk by a 100-year-old fortification staffed by untrained recruits and retirees and equipped with 50-year-old weapons. Colonel Eriksen had fulfilled his mission and denied an invader access to the capital. The effects of halting the German advance were immediate and significant, although the country was ultimately captured and retaken. Troops with the specific mission of capturing the king, the Norwegian government and the national gold reserve were aboard the Blücher; however, due to her sinking, all three were able to escape.
