Spiritual Classic Audio: “A Search in Secret India”; Chapter 2
This is an audio rendition of Chapter 2, “A Prelude to the Quest” from the famous spiritual classic, “A Search in the Secret India”, which I am keen to try. Written by the famous British journalist Paul Brunton (real name Raphael Hurst), this book, which was later translated into many languages around the world, was first published in 1934. It is also the book that, a few years ago, led me to what I did not expect the indisputable Guru to be revealed to my heart and inner self; the only person I have felt even remotely guided to feel this way, throughout my spiritual journey. The fact that he had taken birth and been freed from the cycle of birth and death, long before I was born, did not matter. This book is also of epic significance, particularly because it came out at a time when the majority of the West still had very little idea of life's infinite store of deep wisdom and the highest truths which had supported India for centuries, and where India still largely believed. being a land of the uncivilized and illiterate who had no valuable knowledge to offer the world. At a time when few people, outside of India, perhaps knew that there were even concepts like “liberation” possible for a common man. The book is based on a completely critical and unbiased account of a scientifically minded author's determined spiritual journey across the vast territory of India. His goal was to discover for himself the truth behind all the fascinating, incredulous and often unverifiable stories he had heard about this exotic land, here and there, for years. The writing reveals a fascinating account of this sometimes enriching journey; often disappointing and exhausting, but culminating in the rational-minded Paul Brunton discovering the treasure he never even dreamed existed; and… his own Guru, the sage of Arunachala. This is the book that ultimately introduced not only the truths behind yoga and meditation, but also the great, almost silent sage, one of the last "known" ones of modern India, to Western audiences. The impressed reception led to the beginning of an era of many foreign seekers traveling to India, which still continues – in the hope of discovering the same grace, the same knowledge and the same eternal happiness in this land of yogis, of mystics and great the purest of pure and liberated sages Shri Ramana Maharshi.
