About “At Sea”…
Out to Sea follows the journey of a young girl named Lara who is so sad after the death of her grandmother that she is taken out to sea on a flood of her own tears. While seemingly completely overcome by sadness, she discovers a pearl at the bottom of the ocean that reminds her of the many happy times Lara shared with her grandmother. With the pearl safe by her side, Lara realizes that she is not alone and finds the strength to pick up her oars and return home.
Illustrated in Helen Kellock's inimitable style of pencil, gouache, and watercolor, Out to Sea expresses the experience of anxiety and grief with unprecedented sensitivity. Unlike other children's books about loss or grief that lead their readers toward a conclusion, Out to Sea shows readers how they can ride the wave of emotions without losing focus.
About Hélène Kellock…
Helen Kellock is a Glasgow-based illustrator and artist with an MA in Illustration from the Glasgow School of Art. For her work on The Star in the Forest, Kellock has won numerous awards, including the 2018 Batsford Prize for Children's Illustration, and was highly commended in the Macmillan Book Prize. She was also highly commended in the 2018 Penguin Random House Student Design Award. Kellock received the Picture Hooks Illustrator of the Year award in 2019.
