Contact with the DSS attack cruiser _Dunkirk_ was lost just minutes after the Uniform repeater Oscar received its last routine log update. The position report places the flagship inside the contested Gitairn sector. Vice Admiral Charles Hughes commands. The ship and its crew have now officially been missing for almost 90 hours.
Captain Jason Hunter, the new skipper of the battleship _Argent_, is ordered to investigate. He sets course for the last position reported by the admiral, knowing full well that once he leaves Alliance space, he could face alien warships, hidden traps or many other threats, including the grim possibility that his enemies will turn out to be humans.
Hunter recruits pilots from his old strike fighter squadron to serve as his commanding officers. They advise the young captain to be careful, even as they prepare the ship and crew for the possibility of all-out war to save the officer Hunter considers both his friend and mentor.
There is no margin for error and no time for uncertainty. A young man in command of a five-million-ton weapon must find the courage to lead more than 100 combat spaceships and nearly four thousand fleets and navies against enemies seen and unseen.
When Argent discovers a Sentinel planetary defense battery and the surrounding deployment of deadly mines in a treacherous asteroid field where no humans should be, the captain realizes he has flown into a powder magazine.
And his ship could be the solution.
