Surviving Vietnam is an episodic series of stories told by Dennis Nickell, a surviving Vietnam veteran. The series begins before Vietnam, continues with basic training and finally into the jungle and beyond. The series will culminate with the continuing story and eventual reality of trying to survive life after the war.
Goal: Reduce the daily number of active-duty military and veteran suicides and bring as much healing to survivors as possible.
Although the actual number of daily suicides committed by active duty and veteran military personnel is a matter of debate, one thing is certain: any number greater than zero is too many. The sad reality is that many of our bravest men and women in uniform choose what they believe is their only option.
What happens to a combat veteran when he returns home? What is the reality of living with 100% PTSD? Why do these men and women have so much difficulty reintegrating into daily life? For many, lack of understanding and/or connection to available resources is a REAL problem.
The all too common VA experience of nothing but hellish bureaucracy ending in pills and pain is
enough to encourage many veterans to throw in the towel.
