Swing District Rep. Elissa Slotkin Supports Trump Impeachment in Heated Town Hall
/"I worked on the National Security Council under George Bush. I worked under the National Security Council under Barack Obama/," Slotkin said. /"What was fundamentally different to me was that the president decided to do this for his own political gain./"

Michigan Rep. Elissa Slotkin, a Democratic freshman who flipped a battleground Republican seat, said Monday she will vote to impeach President Donald Trump.

Slotkin, who first announced his decision in an article in the Detroit Free Press, explained his thinking during an intense town hall at Oakland University in suburban Detroit.

Many people in the crowd of more than 400 stood and applauded her repeatedly, while a small group of pro-Trump and anti-impeachment protesters heckled her and shouted "four more years" for Trump.

“For me, it was a matter of principle,” said Slotkin, who worked in U.S. intelligence, national security and defense during the Obama and Bush administrations.

She said she made her decision /"out of a duty to protect and defend the Constitution. I feel that in my bones, and I will stand by it, no matter what it does to me politically./"

Slotkin represents the 8th Congressional District, which supported Trump over Hillary Clinton in her 2016 election but elected Slotkin in 2018 against a Republican incumbent.

Trump faces two articles of impeachment from House Democrats: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

They point out that Trump pressured Ukraine to investigate his 2020 political rival, Joe Biden, while using as leverage the military aid the country relies on to counter Russia, as well as its efforts to block the House investigation.

The House will vote Wednesday on the articles of impeachment approved last week by the House Judiciary Committee.

The vote is almost certain to result in Trump's impeachment, although he is expected to be acquitted in a Senate trial.
