A woman in her 50s has died from “multiple and significant” knife wounds to her upper body in Sydney's west.

A 42-year-old housemate was arrested at the scene in Russell Lea.

Detectives are investigating the incident as domestic violence-related, but the two men were not in an intimate relationship.
