Turkestan range:
One of the northern extensions of the Pamir-Alay system, the Turkestan Range extends for a total length of 340 km from the Alay Mountains on Kyrgyzstan's border with Tajikistan to the Samarkand oasis in Uzbekistan . It extends in the east-west direction, north of the Zeravshan Range, forming the southern boundary of the Ferghana Valley in Tajikistan and the Golodnaya Steppe in Uzbekistan. The highest altitudes are in the east, near the border with Kyrgyzstan. The maximum elevation is Pik Skalisty at 5,621 meters (18,442 feet). Glaciation occurs mainly in the east. The southern slopes are made up of bare cliffs and mountainous steppes; the northern slopes are covered with forests. A highway crossing the 3,378 meter (11,083 ft) Shakhristan Pass connects the capital Dushanbe to Khujand in northern Tajikistan (Sughd province)
