This episode traces the rise of the House of Anjou/Plantagenêt and the birth of what some historians call the Angevin Empire. The episode covers the reigns of two kings, Henry II and Richard I, better known as Richard the Lionheart. It focuses primarily on their relations with France, but also discusses in detail the conquest of Ireland and Richard's role in the Third Crusade.

Book recommendations:

Medieval Britain: A Very Short Introduction – This is one of the best books for an overview of the politics of the time. It is very light over certain periods and however misses a certain continental context. Very cheap though.

The Plantagenet Empire, 1154-1224 – The best intro/summary that is not in French. Very good at describing the relationship between Henry II and his sons (especially Richard and John).

Ten Minute English and British History is a series of short ten-minute animated narrative documentaries designed as revision reminders or simple introductions to a subject. Please note that these are not meant to be exhaustive and there are many things that I was not able to fit into the episodes that I would have liked to have included. Thanks for watching, though, it's always appreciated.
