Texas: large hail and devastating winds to come with the return of storms!
Scattered thunderstorm chances return to Texas over the next few days. May storms typically bring large hail, strong winds, and enough lightning to force you to break out your sunglasses at night. While some will face severe storms, others will be stuck in the heat and humidity…until a cold front arrives by the end of the week.

Scattered severe thunderstorms are possible late afternoon through mid-evening across Northeast Texas, North Texas, parts of Central Texas and the Brazos Valley. These storms will likely form near a draped dry line/cold front near the Red River. Extreme levels of instability are forecast, along with modest wind shear, which will favor supercell thunderstorms. Large to giant hail up to the size of a grapefruit and softball is possible with the most intense storms over the next few days. Localized wind gusts and a slight tornado threat also pose dangers. The storms will not be particularly fast but should tend to move east/southeast. Storm coverage may remain more isolated today, but those experiencing any storm could face large chunks of ice falling from the sky. The risk and intensity of storms will diminish late this evening.

The cold front will slowly move south through Thursday. By late afternoon, another round of scattered severe storms is expected to develop across North Texas into East Texas. Like today, the most intense storms will be supercells accompanied by giant hail and potentially damaging winds. Storms could gain strength and form a cluster moving toward Central Texas and the Brazos Valley Thursday evening. While we don't like to use the "big city versus country" argument in our weather forecasts, the next couple of days could be one of those costly hail events if we get an intense supercell over a corridor crowded. Hopefully we won't get anything like that and instead of hail-producing supercells we'll end up with garden showers. I can be optimistic, right?

Friday looks docile in the thunderstorm department as the cold front continues to move south. Ahead of the front over the next few days, a summer preview will remind two-thirds of South Texas why we don't like high humidity during the warmer months. What may be our last cold front of spring for the southern half of Texas will bring a respite from the heat and humidity this weekend. High temperatures across Texas will drop into the 70s and 80s Friday through Sunday. We'll also lose some of that odious tropical humidity.

Rain chances will increase in several areas of Texas on Sunday. A potential for heavier rain is becoming evident across Central Texas, the Brazos Valley and East Texas, with one to three inches possible. Given the ever-increasing problems with flooding, there are fears the problem could recur. We will be paying attention to the precipitation forecast as we approach Sunday. The good news is that most people will not see excessive precipitation and severe thunderstorms are not likely this weekend.
