“The Area of Interest” by Martin Amis
“The Zone of Interest” by Martin Amis is a captivating and thought-provoking novel set in a fictionalized version of Auschwitz during World War II. The novel primarily focuses on the lives of three characters: Golo Thomsen, an SS officer; Szmul, a Jewish Sonderkommando, and Hannah Doll, the wife of a high-ranking officer. Despite this, Szmul still manages to find moments of humanity, such as his interactions with Hannah Doll and his attempts to bury the dead with some semblance of dignity. Szmul's character is a powerful reminder of the humanity that can exist even in the most dehumanizing circumstances. Finally, the character of Hannah Doll offers a different perspective on the events of Auschwitz. Unlike Thomsen and Szmul, who are both directly involved in the day-to-day running of the camp, Hannah is an outsider who only becomes aware of the true nature of Auschwitz after beginning an affair with Thomsen. The character of Hannah is particularly interesting because she represents the complicity of ordinary Germans in the atrocities committed during the Holocaust. Despite her growing awareness of the horrors around her, Hannah is ultimately unable to take meaningful action to stop them. Instead, she becomes complicit in the crimes through her relationship with Thomsen. Through the character of Hannah, Amis shows how the normalization of evil can allow people to justify even the most heinous crimes. Overall, “The Zone of Interest” is a powerful and thought-provoking novel that offers a unique perspective on the events of the Holocaust. By focusing on the experiences of three very different characters, Amis is able to explore the complexity of human nature in the face of extreme circumstances.
