The Battle for Free Speech on Campus: Greg Lukianoff at the Museum of Sex
“The U.S. Department of Education just redefined harassment to make every man, woman and child guilty of harassment in one fell swoop,” says Greg Lukianoff, president of the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) . , which defends the right to free speech on campus.

Lukianoff is referring to a recent letter sent by the U.S. Department of Education and the U.S. Department of Justice to the University of Montana, which redefines harassment as "any unwelcome sexual speech." The letter also stated that it was intended as a "model for colleges and universities across the country."

Lukianoff joined John Tierney of the New York Times for a discussion about the implications of this letter and FIRE's continued fight against campus speech codes. Lukianoff also spoke about his recent book, Unlearning Liberty: Campus Censorship and the End of American Debate.

The discussion took place at the Museum of Sex in New York on May 14, 2013, during an event sponsored by the Reason Foundation.

UPDATE: Two weeks after Lukianoff's speech at the event, the U.S. Department of Education responded to the controversy, saying his letter was "entirely consistent with the First Amendment and did not create any new or broader definitions of unlawful sexual harassment under Title "IX or Title IV./" Lukanoff responded that the DOE's "feeble attempt to reverse its disastrous May 9 letter is too little, too late./" You can read more at ongoing controversy here: http://reason.com /blog/2013/05/30/le-politique-federal-doit-clarifier-son

In December, Lukianoff sat down with Nick Gillespie to talk about his book. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v_VjaKpjOttw

In August, Gillespie also had an in-depth conversation with Professor Alan Charles Kors of the University of Pennsylvania, co-founder of FIRE. They discussed speech codes, libertarianism and much more. http://www.youtube.com/watch?vjjPYjvOnPx4
