The Big Bang Theory for Children Discover this theory on the birth of the universe.
You've probably heard of the Big Bang Theory before. But do you know what it really is? In The Big Bang Theory for Kids you will learn exactly what the exact origin of this idea about the birth of the universe is. Along the way, you'll also learn a little more about our own galaxy and solar system.

The Big Bang theory was first suggested by a cosmologist and priest named Georges Lemaître in the 1920s. He believes that the universe began as a single atom at the beginning of time. Rather than an explosion, the universe simply began to expand in a fraction of a second thanks to matter and energy. Over time, the expansion slowed, but Lemaître and many other scientists believe the universe is still expanding today.

The force of gravity plays a huge role in everything about the universe. All objects in space are formed when particles and gases from the expansion of the universe come together (by gravity). When small amounts of dust and gas gather together, planets form and begin to orbit the star. Another force called dark energy or dark matter is also important. We don't have much information about this, but scientists think it's what's causing the cosmos to separate more and more quickly.

We hope you and your students enjoyed learning about this awesome idea! If you want to learn even more, head over to our website and download one of our many free universe lesson plans, filled with activities, worksheets, and more!
