The Comic Roots of RL Stine's Goosebumps
If you grew up in the United States in the 1990s, there's a good chance you came across the Goosebumps books. You remember scary young adult novels that made you check under your bed before turning off the lights at night. Still one of the best-selling book series of all time, this month marks the 25th anniversary of the first release of /"Goosebumps/." But get this: Before series writer Robert Lawrence (RL) Stine was scaring kids, he cut his teeth on weird comics and funny stories. Stine even devoted the first 10 years of his writing career to comic books. But after an author dropped out of writing a young adult horror novel at publisher Scholastic, Stine stepped in and his book was a success. He decided to switch gears and get into horror, and the rest is history. But he attributes the success of his scary stories to his twisted sense of humor.
