The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas tells the story of Edmond Dantès, a young sailor unjustly imprisoned due to a plot by his enemies.
After years on a remote island used to house political prisoners, where he is mentored by another prisoner who imparts his vast knowledge of the world and confides the location of a treasure, Dantes escapes.
Thanks to his education and his friend's wealth, he forges a new identity as a count and sets out to take revenge. Through clever intrigue and skillful manipulation, he eliminates the perpetrators from his trap one by one.
Full of gripping adventure, the novel has enchanted generations of readers with its delightful vindication of its noble and resourceful protagonist.
The Count of Monte Cristo by French writer Alexandre Dumas was first published in 1844-45. Just like his character, the Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas lived lavishly, traveled widely and had many adventures. To maintain his lifestyle, Dumas wrote prolifically and gained popularity through works such as The Three Musketeers.
The adventure novel The Count of Monte Cristo contains many enduring themes, including betrayal and revenge, as after being falsely accused, Dantes escapes from prison and believes that Divine Providence guides him in revenge; retribution, since Dantès adapts the punishment of each offender to his bad actions and his particular weaknesses; and wealth and power, as Dantes gains power partly through treasure and partly through his own ingenuity and application of his knowledge. Important motifs include transformation, the sea and ambition.
