The Dark Frontier (1936) is Eric Ambler's first novel, on the genesis of which he / "[…] Became a press agent for a film star, but shortly after joined a large London advertising agency as editor and /"man of ideas/". Over the next few years wrote incessantly on varied subjects ranging from baby feeding to non-ferrous alloys. Traveled to most countries in Europe, was stranded in. Marseille and almost drowned in the Bay of Naples. Decided, on a rainy day in Paris, to write a thriller. The book makes no mention of uranium or any other radioactive material and instead assumes that detonating an atomic bomb would involve a considerable electrical charge. Yet Ambler can be credited with becoming aware, before many others, of this coming weapon that would have such a profound effect on the entire world, and his depiction of scientists in a secret hideout constructing such a bomb could be considered a preview. of the Manhattan Project – and he correctly assumed that refugees from Nazi Germany might be involved in such a project.
