The Dark Side of Volunteering Abroad for Rich Kids

Voluntourism is when privileged, Western benefactors pay for the experience of charitable work abroad. But according to this former volunteer tourist, the orphanage she thought she was building was actually dismantled and rebuilt throughout the night.

Additionally, the children were smeared to make them appear poorer to add to the volunteers' experience. Children were forced to sing and dance for them – and worse.

We give a glimpse into this fake world, where people pay for the experience of charity without actually helping the locals – and often even making their lives worse.
