Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Rūmī (Persian: جلالالدین محمد رومی), also known as Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī (جلالالدین محمد بلخ ى), Mevlânâ/Mawlānā (مولانا, /"our master/"), awlawī (مولوی, / "my master/"), and more simply as Rumi (September 30, 1207 – December 17, 1273), was a 13th-century Persian poet, Hanafi faqih, Islamic scholar, Maturidi theologian and Sufi mystic from Greater Khorasan in Greater Iran. . Rumi's influence transcends national boundaries and ethnic divisions: Iranians, Tajiks, Turks, Greeks, Pashtuns, other Central Asian Muslims, and Muslims on the Indian subcontinent have greatly appreciated his legacy spiritually over the past seven centuries. His poems have been widely translated into many world languages and transposed into various formats. Rumi has been described as the "most popular poet" and "best-selling poet" in the United States.
Rumi, 1207–1273 CE, was a 13th-century Persian Muslim poet, jurist, Islamic scholar, theologian, and Sufi mystic. Rumi's influence transcends national boundaries and ethnic divisions in the Muslim world and beyond. His poems have been widely translated into many languages of the world. Rumi became a widely read and popular poet, even in the United States.
Like other mystical and Sufi poets in Persian literature, Rumi's poetry speaks of the love that permeates the world. Rumi's teachings also express the principles summarized in the Quranic verse that Shams-e Tabrizi cited as the essence of prophetic guidance: "Know that there is no god but Him and ask forgiveness for your sin" ( Q. 47:19). In the interpretation attributed to Shams, the first part of the verse commands humanity to seek knowledge of tawhid (the unity of God), while the second asks them to deny their own existence. In Rumi's terms, tawhid is fully experienced through love, the connection being made explicit in his verse which describes love as "that flame which, when it ignites, burns everything except the Beloved Eternal".
Rumi passionately believed in using music, poetry and dance as a path to reach God. For Rumi, music helped worshipers focus their entire being on the divine and do so so intensely that the soul was both destroyed and resurrected. It is from these ideas that the practice of the Whirling Dervishes developed into a ritual form. His teachings became the basis of the Mevlevi order, organized by his son Sultan Walad. Rumi encouraged Sama to listen to music and turn around or do the sacred dance. In the Mevlevi tradition, samāʿ represents a mystical journey of spiritual ascension through spirit and love to the Perfect. In this journey, the seeker symbolically turns toward the truth, grows in love, abandons the ego, finds the truth, and arrives at the Perfect. The seeker then returns from this spiritual journey, with greater maturity, to love and be of service to all of creation without discrimination of beliefs, races, classes and nations.
