The epic painting of Napoleon's Russian campaign in 1812 by Joseph Minard
Napoleon's march to Russia was an enormous undertaking and one of the deadliest and most disturbing episodes in the history of warfare. Charles Minard, in his famous 1869 painting of the losses of the Grande Armée in 1812-13, captured something of the epic bravery and horror of this march. Considered one of the most perfect and impactful graphics ever made, Minard's map is also a map, incredibly created as a storytelling tool.

In this video we will review the march of Napoleon itself and the progress of the Grande Armée, as well as the life of Charles Joseph Minard, and some speculation about why he created this map and what he meant with her. There is some controversy over the meaning of the card, and in fact it was not well known until the late 20th century, when it became a favorite of designers.

Yet the events depicted by the map go even deeper than Napoleon's march and touch on the very nature of war, death and great men. /"The figurative map of the losses of the men of the Grande Armée during the Russian campaign of 1812-1813/" is truly a superb map. I hope you like the video.
My goal with this series is to explore the amazing maps that humanity has created throughout human history and use them as ways to connect with our ancestors. I hope you enjoy this journey with me, and please let me know if you like this format and would like to see more videos.

FIXES
Edward Tufte did not actually state that the map was an "anti-war statement". This comes from articles summarizing his views on the map. My mistake!
